Dear Naija Girl” is more than just a name; it’s a promise, a movement, and a sisterhood. It began with a dream to create a haven where Nigerian women from all over the world could come together to uplift, inspire, and strengthen each other
The story of “Dear Naija Girl” began with Cynthia ‘Tasha’ Osajibenedict, a passionate writer, speaker, and social activist. Having shared her personal experiences and insights through her writing and media work, Cynthia recognized the need for a dedicated space where Nigerian women could connect, share their stories, and find empowerment. This vision was born out of countless conversations with women who longed for a community that celebrated their unique experiences and provided support and inspiration.
I was 11 years old when I realised this was not the life I wanted. I had just watched my aunt get insulted by the first daughter’s society of my kindred called “umu Ada” because the father of her children had left her and ran off with another woman. “Why does she get the blame for the actions of a man?” I asked myself. Years down the road, I would come to realise that what I experienced was merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the myriad of challenges women face in society. It was just the beginning of understanding the deeply ingrained biases and often hypocritical standards to which women are subjected.
This revelation opened my eyes to the broader spectrum of issues that impact women’s lives daily, from systemic discrimination to societal expectations. It sheds light on the complexities of gender inequality and the urgent need for change in how women are perceived and treated.
I should have known then that I was a feminist, but alas, it took me 15 more years to realize what I know now— that I am a feminist through and through, and intend to teach other women to be better and do better for themselves regardless of what our society entails them to be.
Dear Naija Girl is one of the mediums with which I do this. This community is dedicated to unraveling the complexities of womanhood, sisterhood, relationships, and life’s profound truths. Through captivating conversations, I fearlessly delve into societal issues, offering fresh perspectives and empowering insights, particularly through the lens of storytelling. One of the angles I passionately explore is intersectional feminism. In this community, I highlight how this lens allows us to dissect and understand multifaceted societal issues. Intersectional feminism acknowledges that gender inequality intersects with other forms of discrimination, such as race, tribe, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. Through heartfelt conversations, I explore the raw emotions, experiences, and life lessons that have shaped women’s journeys. From overcoming traumatic experiences to navigating life-altering setbacks, my community helps me to shed light on the inherent strength that lies within each woman. By listening to women’s traumatic and more often, inspiring stories, I hope to empower and inspire my community to embrace their womanhood and celebrate it as it should be, but most importantly, we hope to create a community of sisters who will support and help each other thrive.
This is why I write, I like to write books that share experiences and give women something to relate to. Whether it’s a book of experiences, a fiction novel on lifestyle, romance, erotica, etc. Everything i write is about sharing women’s stories, and everything i write whether fiction or nonfiction carries an atom of truth and a dose of reality. For me, my storytelling mediums, allow me to speak my truth and give women a platform that provides them the safety, and the unbiased coverage of anonymity to share their truth. Through interviews, personal narratives, and expert insights, we unpack the layers of societal issues, inviting listeners, readers, and online followers to critically examine their own beliefs and biases. My goal is to foster empathy, solidarity, and collective action among our audience, empowering them to advocate for social change in their communities, and most especially— to give women a platform to be heard
